check-usb-scanner is obsolete and will no longer be updated. Instead, the support for detecting USB chips has been added to sane-find-scanner. As only the upcoming SANE 1.0.13 will contain support (1.0.12 and earlier does not!), please get a recent CVS snapshot of sane-backends if you want to try the code.
This little tool can be used to find out, which chipset a USB scanner uses. It doesn't know about that many chipsets currently, but it's a start. currently. More information is available in the README file.
